A group of cheerleaders from the North East is preparing to tackle a 10K road race in the region to raise funds for charity after a former team mate died from a rare form of cancer aged just 24.  On Sunday 7 May, over 30 members of the Newcastle Northern Angels will run the Siglion Sunderland City 10k to support Smile From Hatti, a charity set up in memory of Hatti Sandall, who passed away after a battle with sarcoma.

Newcastle Northern Angels is Newcastle University’s official cheerleading squad, made up of around 65 girls and boys.  The team competes in national cheerleading competitions throughout the year, as well as performing at events with jazz, pom and hip-hop dance routines.  The cheer routines aren’t the classic pom pom dances that usually spring to mind, but complex combinations of gymnastics, acrobatics, stunts and dance.

Smile From Hatti was set up in memory of a former member of the Newcastle Northern Angels, Hatti Sandall, who passed away in 2015, after a battle with sarcoma.  The charity provides funds to support young people with cancer, enabling them to access complementary therapies, services or equipment, such as food hampers, pamper sessions, clothes and music vouchers.  The charity’s aim is to provide relief and bring a smile to the faces of young people living with cancer, improving their quality of life.

Kate Dunmore, vice president of the Newcastle Northern Angels, comments:

“Many of our squad members took part in the Sunderland run back in 2014, when Hatti was still fighting cancer, and we raised a lot of money then.  It was devastating to lose our friend, but Smile From Hatti is a wonderful legacy and we want to ensure that the work being done in Hatti’s name is continued.  Raising money by tackling the Siglion Sunderland City 10K gives us an opportunity to do that – the Northern Angels and our supporters will be out in force on 7 May.”
