Congratulations to all our sore-footed Sunderland Superstars! It was a bright and brilliant day in the city as thousands took to the streets and the sea-front producing a stunning running spectacle.
The inaugural redspottedhanky.com Marathon of the North and the redspottedhanky.com Sunderland City 10K both started and finished at the Stadium of Light before heading off over Wearmouth Bridge and into the city centre. The Marathon took runners to Hendon beach, Barnes Park and all along the sea-front at Seaburn where they joined the 10K route at Roker Park for the home stretch.
The weather was kind to the runners with bright sunshine and cool temperatures throughout the day to help them on their way. In the Sunniside area where the two races passed by each other there was a fantastic atmosphere with live music and plenty of support to add to the occasion. Red spotted hankies were in plentiful supply to add to the colour and fun and some impressive fancy dress outfits definitely took the eye. One runner carried a fridge on his back for the whole marathon and another pulled a huge wooden cross! Many were running for numerous charities who will be delighted with their efforts. Well done to all.
Saturday had given the whole weekend a fabulous introduction when hundreds of families and young athletes took part in the junior Run, Sunderland in 2012 mile and Nialls Miles for the Foundation of Light. Olympic Gold medallists Sally Gunnell and Event Director Steve Cram conducted a pre-race talk-in at the Pasta Party on Saturday evening where three local acts provided live music.
On Sunday a Junior Development mile was also held between the Marathon and 10K. All results are available by clicking here.
Once again well done to everyone who took part and a huge thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who helped make it a memorable day for all.
