Renowned charity champion Colin Burgin-Plews from South Shields, better known as ‘The Big Pink Dress’, is so dedicated to his fundraising cause, he laced up his trainers seven weeks early to complete the Siglion Sunderland City 10k in aid of Breast Cancer Now.
Gaining his unusual nickname due to a penchant for wearing eye-catching dresses while undertaking numerous charity runs, the Newcastle United FC fan will be donning a special dress in the Sunderland AFC colours for the occasion.
‘Big Pink Dress’ walked the 10k route on Sunday 19 March after signing up to the event, which officially takes place on Sunday 07 May, but being forced to pull out due to an ankle injury and a forthcoming operation.
Not one to be beaten and to let down those who had helped him reach his £500 fundraising target(adding to the £50,000 he has raised over the course of the past three years), Colin Burgin-Plewsmade the decision to tackle the 10K early and was joined by plenty of supporters who supported him when he set off from Keel Square in Sunderland city centre on Sunday.
The well known North East fundraiser will not be completely absent from the Siglion Sunderland City 10k run when it gets underway alongside the popular half marathon event – he’s been asked by event organisers to start the race and the special red and white Sunderland dress will be getting a second outing.
